TowerFall Dark World Expansion Out Today

TowerFall, the couch co-op / competitive game ported to the PS4 in 2013 has new DLC out today. The DLC includes modifiers for multiplayer (Including a new “trigger arrow), and also a new 4 player co-op mode called “Dark World”. I loved the “Quest” mode from the original release, but was disappointed by it only allowing for 2 player co-op. This Dark World mode could be really fun.

The DLC will be available for purchase today for $9.99.

The developer also mentioned they are continuing to work on a vita release of the game and said they would release more info soon.

Music Spotlight: The Distance — Cake

Sure I’m writing about a song that came out in 1996, but I just discovered it this year and I’m hoping that maybe I can share it with someone else who hadn’t heard it before — The Distance by Cake.

Here are the lyrics:

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line
Engines pumping and thumping in time
The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup

They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern

As they speed through the finish, the flags go down
The fans get up and they get out of town
The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he’s driving and striving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns

He’s going the distance, he’s going for speed
She’s all alone, all alone in her time of need
Because he’s racing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He’s going the distance

No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine
He’s haunted by something he cannot define
Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force

In his mind, he’s still driving, still making the grade
She’s hoping in time that her memories will fade
‘Cause he’s racing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s fighting and biting and riding on his horse

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he’s striving and driving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns

‘Cause he’s going the distance, he’s going for speed
She’s all alone, all alone in her time of need
Because he’s racing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He’s racing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He’s going the distance, he’s going for speed
He’s going the distance

Its a song of nerd white rap determination that shows the dedication of a racecar driver crushed by the loss of his love and taking his sadness out by fighting even harder to win at the track — where he still loses. A simple driving bass progression with choral vocals behind the chorus while topping it off with a cool sampled horn section helps bring out the sad, but determined mood of this driver.

Hope somebody enjoyed this song as much as I have been lately!

Oculus Rift Shipping 2016

The Oculus Rift, Kickstarted back in 2012 has announced officially that the virtual reality headset, as well as an integrated software platform with with to receive VR content will be shipping in Q1 of 2016.

Building on the last noted prototype, called Crescent Bay, improvements include “an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit”.

The Oculus Rift was one of the first in the recent big technical push for virtual reality. While currently the focus for the Rift is on gaming, it could have potential other uses, especially since the company was acquired by Facebook last year in 2014.

Oculus says they will be revealing additional information about the product, “in the weeks ahead”.

BUNGIE TO LIVE STREAM DESTINY HOUSE OF WOLVES EXPANSION (Pt 2)

Tomorrow (Wednesday May 6th) at 12PM Central, Bungie is hosting a live stream on Twitch where they plan on showing off the new coop horde mode, “Prison of Elders” which will be featured during the House of Wolves Expansion. According to Bungie, “teams of three players can take on waves of increasingly difficult enemies to earn high-level legendary and exotic rewards” .  This appears to be the fill in for the lack of raid at the beginning of this expansion.

You will be able to view the Twitch stream once it has gone live here .

A new trailer was also released to announce this twitch stream

Destiny Expansion II: House of Wolves, will be available on Tuesday May 19th.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is Coming in 2015

The rumors have been confirmed. Game Informer was given an exclusive hands on demo with the game and the June issue of Game Informer will contain more information (Which I will be able to verify when my copy comes in later this month).

The game appears to have both solo and coop missions and will hearken back to the Pro Skater games of old with objectives and challenges throughout different levels. There are also some sort of leveling mechanics which will translate between your online sessions and local sessions.  You can also create custom skate parks which can be shared online.

Confirmed skaters are Nyjah Huston, Aaron Homoki, Ishod Wair, Riley Hawk, Lizzie Armanto, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Leticia Bufoni,  Andrew Reynolds, and of course, Tony Hawk.

The game is slated to be released on Xbone and PS4 later this year with eventual 360 and PS3 versions being released later.

This was a series I always thought was wicked sweet even though I never personally was able to get super into it because of my age. Being  a child of the early 2000s of course I think skateboarding is super rad.  You can also look at some of the #Hashtag episodes earlier this year to see that Drewby and I are trying to become professional skateboarders.  I for one am looking forward to this.

Drewby and Michael Play: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

We’ve been playing a lot of Hearthstone lately and wanted to share it with everyone who wasn’t familiar with what it is. It is a TOTALLY FREE to play game that you should definitely check out if it interests you at all. It is easy to learn and hard to master with a lot of depth and since you can drop in and drop out with little 15 minute (or less) play sessions, it totally works for a busy schedule. Hope you enjoy!

Avengers: Age of Ultron Impressions (Spoiler Free)

I just got back from seeing Marvel’s newest movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron and I will say, I thought it was a great addition to the comic book movie series. It felt so much like a comic book throughout the film, complete with scenes shot to look exactly like a comic book panel. The plot is pretty predictable throughout the movie, and comic book nerds have been predicting and speculating about the plot via the comic book series related to the same subject, but I think it still lands well overall and was fun throughout.

This review will be generally spoiler free so it will be shorter (Expect a spoilercast later on to hit the site), but as mentioned, I really liked it. The character portrayals for each of the main Avengers I think as very accurate to the characters as portrayed in the previous movies, and one of the new characters I think was pretty good as well. The action overall in the movie was even better than the first one with lots of great fight scenes and characters using combos together to take out the baddies. If you want to see good guys fighting bad guys in some awesome ways, that is here in spades.

The movie’s themes do get a bit dark at various points, and I think that it portrays the dark themes in a very appropriate manner. They are themes that fit very well into the comic book genre (which, duh, they are themes and stories taken from the comic books themselves) and are controversial in a way that you can see logic on both sides of the issue.

There are also quite a few moments good comic relief in the film that relate to the differences between the characters, their abilities, and callbacks to previous movies in the franchise that all hit really well. I was genuinely laughing out loud during quite a few parts of this movie just because the jokes are delivered at the right times in the right way.

If I were to list some negative things about the film, I would say Ultron himself was hit or miss. Sometimes he was genuinely imposing and creepy and it worked really well with the darker themes in the film. Other times, however, I feel like he was a little bit too goofy. Because of his varying performance, I think parts of the overall plot aren’t explained or explored as much as they could have been. Thankfully, the individual character stories and the way they react to what is happening helps fill in some of the gaps. Also, of the two main characters introduced, I think one of them is fleshed out much more than the other.

There are so many other things that I really want to bring up and discuss, but I will save that for the spoiler cast when it hits. Be looking forward to that.

My Impression Overall: 4/5

Drewby’s impression of the movie: Meh. He didn’t understand why the rest of us liked it very much. He said that he had gone in with lowered expectations (because of what he deemed to be negative reviews), but was still disappointed.
